The way that the avr-gcc chain is updated is really kind of incongruous to building from scratch.

Using this set of instructions as well as most instructions will give you a compiler chain that will be missing most devices added in the last year or so.

When atmel releases a new device, patches are added to the freebsd ports collection. The maintainers expect that communities like winavr and the other binary releases will roll the patches into their release.
